The BirdDog P240 on the catwalk is Camera 4. Run it from the SuperJoy at the video position. This page is for operating the shot; camera engineering stays with the video office.
OPERATING REFERENCEOperator copy revised September 20, 2026Camera engineering stays with videoFMP-8 Investigating · A/B open
Camera Simulator → Practise framing and presets in an approximate FMP scene. This training tool does not control the installed camera.
Before doors, confirm which CAM button selects the house PTZ, which preset is the safe wide, and what Camera 4 is expected to cover. Once the show starts, operate the camera and leave picture engineering to the video office.
Who does what
The SuperJoy drives Camera 4. The video office handles camera engineering.
Operate framing, pan, tilt, zoom, focus and approved presets. Do not change video format, exposure, white balance, gain, color, network settings or camera-control configuration unless the Head of Video specifically asks you to.
If the picture looks wrong, call video. Do not try to engineer around it from the camera menus.

Don't do this during the show
Do not overwrite or build presets unless the Head of Video tells you to.
Do not open the camera's OSD while Camera 4 is on program.
Do not change camera engineering, network settings, control protocol or CAM ID.
Do not factory reset the camera or controller.
Do not use the SuperJoy HDMI output as your program monitor. Watch 4 PTZ on the multiview.
Do not go to the catwalk head during the show unless the Head of Video releases you to it.
Still needs checking
Label the SuperJoy CAM button that selects the house P240.
Document the safe-wide preset and the presets actually used for shows.
Finish tracing the Camera 4 video path.
The first two are operator-facing. The video-path and control investigation belong to the video office.
Confirm the safe-wide preset and the shots the director expects from Camera 4.
Confirm any restricted angles or movement limits.
FMP-8 remains Investigating. Symptom C has a verified recovery; symptoms A and B remain open. Keep the preshow and show restrictions in place.
If the tour adds PTZ cameras, make sure you know which controller buttons belong to the house camera before the show.
02 · Select
Select Camera 4
Power up the SuperJoy and confirm the controller is responsive.
Select the CAM button assigned to the house P240. If the wrong camera moves, stop and call video.
Confirm 4 PTZ has picture on the multiview.
With Camera 4 off program, make a small pan, tilt and zoom move to prove control.
Do not press HOME as a substitute for the safe-wide preset. HOME is a camera function; the FMP safe wide is a show preset.
03 · Prove
Prove the moves you need
Pan left and right. It should start and stop cleanly.
Tilt up and down. Same.
Zoom in and out and check focus at the useful show distances.
Recall the verified safe-wide preset while Camera 4 is off program.
Recall the presets you expect to use and make sure they land where expected.
With video approval and Camera 4 off program, check a slow diagonal. If it collapses to one axis, keep the camera off the bad move and report open FMP-8 symptom A.
04 · Speeds
Use conservative pan, tilt and zoom speeds. Camera 4 is not a whip-pan camera.
Keep pan and tilt speeds reasonably close. A large mismatch can make a diagonal look like a single-axis move.
Set preset speed so recalls arrive cleanly. Test every change off program.
If a speed change does not behave the way you expect, stop changing settings and call video.
05 · Presets
Recall the verified safe-wide preset first and confirm it lands correctly on the multiview.
Recall each preset the show needs while Camera 4 is off program.
If a preset lands wrong, do not keep calling it on air. Park the camera somewhere usable and tell video.
Only SET or overwrite a preset when the Head of Video has released that preset number.
If focus was changed manually, return the camera to the agreed focus mode before handing the shot back.
Have a usable wide ready before doors. Use only presets verified for this show; the standing restriction is presets only and no live pan/tilt moves while FMP-8 symptoms A and B remain open.
Show operation
Start from the verified safe wide.
Use presets for normal show coverage and reposition while Camera 4 is off program.
Do not make live pan/tilt moves under the standing restriction. A change requires a specific Head of Video decision for the show; report any A/B behavior immediately.
Keep the OSD closed while the camera is on program.
Watch 4 PTZ on the multiview.
If control drops and the safe-wide preset was verified that day, recall it off program. If it was not verified, keep Camera 4 off air and establish a usable frame manually if control still works.
End of night
Wait for the Head of Video to release the position.
Park on the verified safe-wide preset if one was established for the show.
Do not change engineering or controller configuration on the way out.
Return the beltpack and headset.
Report anything that behaved differently: what happened, roughly when, and whether the problem repeated.
04 / FMP-8 · Investigating
Symptom C closed; A and B open.
FMP-8 is Investigating / Degraded. Symptom C is closed by the long-press CAM 1 menu-exit procedure, verified in 50 of 50 trials. Symptoms A and B remain open. Keep Camera 4 off unsafe moves and report observations to video.
Symptom C · verified menu exit
If movement continues after centering the stick while the camera menu is open, call the moving camera on comms and keep it off program. Long-press CAM 1 on the SuperJoy G1 to step back a menu level or close the menu; a short press selects a camera and is not the recovery. Confirm the screen shows plain direction text and that the head answers the stick. FMP-8 records 50 of 50 successful trials. A and B remain open.
Symptom A · reported September 11
A diagonal becomes pure pan or pure tilt

Test
What it separates
1
Level PAN SPEED against TILT SPEED, then drive a diagonal
Axis speed mismatch
2
Drive a diagonal from the head's own web interface, with the Head of Video present
Camera from controller
3
Check the BASIC MODE state
One state disables the joystick
4
Confirm the control protocol is VISCA over IP on the head's documented port
Protocol mismatch
5
Compare firmware at both ends
Version gap
6
Check whether it follows preset recall or only joystick drive
Recall path from drive path
Step 1 changes maximum velocity only. No SuperJoy response curve, acceleration, exponent or deadband setting has been identified, so it is not a curve adjustment and not a fix for symptom B.
If A or B appears
If symptom A or B appears, keep Camera 4 off the bad move, return to a verified preset or parked frame, and call video. Do not change protocol, network, firmware or switcher settings during the show.
Symptom B · reported September 17
A held pan accelerates after several seconds
Do not read this as “the maximum pan speed is too high.” The behavior could live in the joystick response, the speed command sent, the head's zoom-adaptive pan and tilt speed, or the head's own motor acceleration. Separate them before adjusting anything.
Symptom B test order

Test
What it separates
1
Hold the joystick at about 20 percent for 10 seconds without moving it
Speed rising with the stick still is time-based ramping. Run this first
2
Repeat wide, then at maximum optical zoom
Whether it depends on zoom
3
Repeat with Tele Convert on, at about 40×
Whether the crop changes the response
4
Reduce PAN SPEED substantially and repeat
Curve or ceiling; expect only the ceiling to move
5
Drive the same move from the head's web interface
Camera from controller
6
Compare the current control method against VISCA over IP
Controller or protocol
What good looks like
A small joystick move stays slow, more stick gives more speed, and a held stick does not continue accelerating on its own. That is the desired behavior, not an acceptance claim for the current venue unit; report any deviation.
05 / Focus and presets
Zoom tight, focus, compose wider.
Focus workflow
Set critical focus at maximum practical zoom on a high-contrast target, eyes or face where possible. Pull back to the intended composition, then recheck at long telephoto.
Do
Punch in to set focus, then compose out. Never judge critical focus from a wide frame.
Prefer manual focus for fixed positions where the shot is predictable.
Use a slightly wider frame when it does the job, rather than sitting at maximum zoom.
Watch for
Continuous autofocus during concert IMAG.
Haze, strobes and LED backgrounds, which make autofocus hunt.
Backlight, darkness, mic stands and performers crossing frame.
If focus is questionable, punch in and establish it. Do not guess from the wide. If the picture itself looks wrong rather than soft, call video instead of changing camera engineering.
